About selsdon community clubhouse

Following a neighbourhood care survey in 1971, it became clear that many older adults in the community were living alone and were prone to isolation and loneliness. The idea of a community space was developed, leading to the opening of The Selsdon Community Clubhouse (previously known as the Selsdon Centre for the Retired) on Saturday 21st April 1979 by the Mayor of Croydon. It is a fitting tribute to the vision and dedicated hard work of those who have the need for such a facility and carried this through to completion.

At the heart of our community, we are more than just a day centre – we are a place of connection, care, and companionship. Our mission is to provide a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment where individuals can feel valued, engaged, and empowered.

The Clubhouse operates as a charity, currently supported by the Lottery Foundation and affiliated with numerous  charities and organisations in the Croydon borough who provide advice and resources to help us deliver the best service possible to the community.

Eight Trustees exercise overall management of the Clubhouse, whilst a small team of two paid staff members manage its day-to-day running and forty+ local volunteers who are the lifeline of what we are able to do.

The Clubhouse offers a sense of community through shared meals, creative activities, friendly conversations or simply being present. We aim to make every moment meaningful. Our Clubhouse is a space where people come together to laugh and support one another – it is a place where everyone belongs. We are actively forging strategic alliances with local organisations, churches, and schools. We warmly encourage these partners to refer both clients and volunteers to the Clubhouse, helping us grow a vibrant, supportive community together.

We are committed to:

  • Fostering inclusion and celebrating diversity

  • Promoting wellbeing through social, emotional, and practical support

  • Encouraging independence whilst offering a helping hand when needed

  • Building relationships that uplift and inspire

The Clubhouse is at the heart of the community, located within the Sainsbury’s complex, is on three bus routes, with free parking available.

If you would like to help us ensure that we can sustain our valuable services to the community through sponsorships or by regular donations, please contact us. Similarly, if you or a family member has enjoyed their time at the Clubhouse, perhaps you might also you might also consider leaving us a legacy in your will.
